A torchere is a tall ornamental stand originally designed to hold a candle or torch, evolving through the 17th and 18th centuries into a decorative support for urns, vases, and sculptures.

These items are traditionally constructed from fine hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, featuring hand-carved shafts, mortise and tenon joinery, and stable tripod or multi-footed bases.

Authenticity is assessed through timber patination, tool marks consistent with period craftsmanship, traditional joinery methods, and age-related wear patterns on the base and top.

A torchere can be utilised in an empty corner or beside seating to display sculptural objects, trailing plants, or ceramics, adding vertical dimension and architectural interest to a room.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
