This Victorian apothecary jar dates from the mid-nineteenth century and functions as an evocative piece for a gentleman's library or bookshelf. Made of stoneware with a brown glaze, the cylindrical jar stands 27 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. The ceramic body features a domed lid topped with a turned finial knop, and relief floral decoration wraps around both the base and the lower section of the lid. A hand-painted label on the front bears the Latin inscription PULV: AMYLI. The salt-glazed surface displays natural craquelure across the label and minor wear around the edges, reflecting its historical use as a medicine container. Today, the jar provides a striking decorative accent when displayed among books or on a study shelf, adding historical character to a traditional interior. The rich brown glaze catches the light on its smooth curved surface, highlighting the detailed moulded floral bands and the weathered label. It remains a functional and aesthetic object for collectors of medical antiques or period ceramics, integrating seamlessly into classical home displays without requiring modification or restoration.

A Victorian apothecary jar is a ceramic or glass storage vessel historically used by 19th-century chemists to hold dry powders, herbs, and pharmaceutical compounds.

These jars were typically manufactured from salt-glazed stoneware, earthenware, or blown glass, frequently decorated with sprigged ceramic mouldings or painted Latin inscriptions.

Authentic period examples exhibit characteristics such as hand-applied or gilded Latin labels, slight asymmetry from manual firing, glaze crazing, and unglazed wear on the base rim.

Display the vessel on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or bathroom console as a decorative focal point within traditional, dark academia, or eclectic schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh solvents or prolonged water immersion to preserve the glaze and original hand-painted labelling.
