Description

A superb quality mahogany ornate rectangular wine cooler, or Cellarette, supported on an integral elaborately carved base. Carved and turned throughout with baskets of flowers, gadrooning, reeded and domed legs terminating in brass castors. To each end are brass lion head handles. The lead liner has a drain to the bottom which means it can hold water and be emptied wherever and when required. It is supported on its original brass castors for portability.

Although this item is not stamped as such, the sheer quality and many of the carved and brass features point to this having been made by the famous firm of cabinet makers – Gillows of Lancaster.

Wine coolers were originally used to hold ice blocks to keep bottles of wine cool in warmer months. Over the years, with the invention of refridgerators, their use has often changed to decorative flower arrangements, such as in some of the images here. They make a fantastic welcome greeting in hallways, receptions and hotels/guest houses.

The imitation flowers have been arranged and fashioned in ‘oasis’ to exactly fit this cellarette and may be purchased for an additional £275.

Dimensions: H: 24 inches W: 28 inches D:19 inches

Dated: c.1850-70.

Declaration

Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this Mahogany Wine Cooler to the 1850s.

Wine coolers and cellarettes originated in the late seventeenth century and gained significant popularity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in grand dining rooms. They were designed to hold bottles and ice to keep wine chilled before it was served at the table.

Authentic period cellarettes are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, often featuring intricate hand-carved motifs, brass or bronze carrying handles, and internal metal linings, such as lead or zinc, to retain ice and water.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery, type of internal metal lining, and the wear patterns on the feet and handles. Period pieces show signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and hand craftsmanship rather than modern machine tooling.

An antique cellarette can be repurposed as a distinctive standalone side table, a plant stand, or a functional drinks holder in a living room, study, or dining space, contrasting traditional craftsmanship with modern decor.

Preservation requires maintaining a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the wood from cracking and applying a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface. The interior metal lining should be kept dry and free from standing moisture to prevent corrosion.
