This Regency wine cooler is a cellarette made from dark brown mahogany, dating from around 1800. The piece takes a grand sarcophagus shape with a tapered rectangular body and a hinged top lid. It stands firmly on carved lion paw feet, displaying a rich dark timber finish, a moulded base frame, and visible wood grain running vertically across the main body. A low cabinet, chair, and decorative dish appear in the background of the room. The cellarette stands at a height of 50 cm, offering a compact and striking addition to a home. Today, this item functions well as a decorative feature in an empty corner of a living room, dining room, or hallway, serving both as a functional container and a period focal point. The antique design integrates smoothly into traditional or classic interior schemes, adding historical character and refined Regency style to contemporary spaces.

A cellarette, or wine cooler, is a decorative wooden chest designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to store and cool wine bottles in formal dining rooms, frequently fashioned in a classical tapered sarcophagus form during the Regency period.

Regency wine coolers were typically crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, often featuring zinc or lead lining internally to retain ice, alongside carved timber or cast metal lion-paw feet.

Authentic Regency examples display period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original metal linings or drainage holes, natural age-related timber shrinkage, and classical architectural proportions with tapered sides.

A cellarette functions effectively as an accent storage chest in a formal dining room, home bar, or entrance hall, placed against a wall or in an alcove to display its decorative profile.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent shrinkage and veneer lifting, and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the finish.
