Small Georgian Mahogany Box Cellarette

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Box Cellarette Having Cavetto Mould To Hinged Top, Enclosing Divided Interior, With Fantastic Shell Cast Original Brass Handles To Sides, Raised On Elegant Ring Turned Legs With Original Brass Castors.

A very good quality little piece of english georgian furniture which would have started its life as a cellarette for the storage of wine. It is of very elegant design and constructed from good quality timber which along with the exceptional brass handles suggest it would have been constructed in on of the top workshops of the time. It also stands with great presence for a relatively small piece of furniture.

It could now serve great purpose as a little occasional lamp table, coffee table, or even a little bedside table. There is also of course the added bonus of being able to utilise the interior storage space.

Overall the condition is good with very little historical damage of any kind and just a few old scuffs and scrapes which have now blended in with the surface and patina. It retains its original brass handles to the side and a working lock and key. The legs are also very elegant.

As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected in our workshops and attended to by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers, receiving a natural wax polish before being placed on sale to ensure it is in its best possible condition and ready for immediate placement following purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cellarette is an elevated timber chest designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to store wine and spirit bottles in dining rooms.

Cellarettes were constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring brass side handles, lead or zinc interior linings, and turned timber legs.

Authentic Georgian cellarettes display hand-dovetailed joinery, period brass fittings such as lion-mask handles, natural timber shrinkage around the lid, and original brass castors.

A cellarette functions effectively as an accent drinks cabinet or end table within a formal dining room, hallway alcove, or library space.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth, applying beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, and keeping the timber away from direct heat sources.
