Description

Henry Barton Baker (1845-1906) was an English Author who, amongst other titles, wrote French "Society from the Fronde to the Great Revolution" and "Our Old Actors". This 1st edition set is complete in 2 volumes published by W H Allen of Pall Mall in 1889 and finely bound by Birdsalls of Northampton, one of the major bookbinding firms in Great Britain from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.

Bound in red crushed half morocco with cloth covering to the boards. The spines are arranged as 6 gilt decorated compartments by 5 raised band, top page edges gilt and marbled end papers. Tissue guarded frontispiece to each volume showing Garrick's Drury Lane and The Kembles' Covent Garden, both from old engraving.

Both are intact and show no signs of cracking/splitting to the interior. Internally clean but showing some light age toning. Remnants of removed bookplate to the front paste-down of volume I and an unused bookplate placed over a previous owner's bookplate to the front paste-down of volume II which also has the book plate for M H Goldberg to the rear paste down, albeit upside down. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian antiquarian books typically feature publisher bindings in cloth or leather, often embellished with gilt stamping and raised bands on the spine, reflecting the craftsmanship of 19th-century printing.

Fine bindings traditionally utilised genuine leathers such as calfskin, morocco, and roan, combined with handmade paper, marbled endpapers, and genuine gold leaf tooling on the spine and covers.

Authentication involves checking title page dates against publisher records, examining typography and paper characteristics, and looking for original binding signatures or binderies marks.

Display them on open bookshelves, library tables, or mantelpieces to add rich texture, historical depth, and sophisticated colour to both traditional and modern interior schemes.

Preserve antique leather by keeping books away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, and periodically treating the leather with professional microcrystalline wax or conditioner to prevent drying.
