This Victorian French Restoration sewing basket uses dark brown rosewood with boxwood string inlay, finished with brass hardware and turned bun feet. The shaped body presents angled flared sides decorated in a geometric trellis pattern, paired with dual upright handles fitted with brass stays. Measuring 10 cm high, 30 cm wide and 24 cm deep, the box rests securely on a sideboard top. Today, this piece serves as a decorative tabletop container for sewing supplies or small keepsakes in a living room, bedroom or study. The compact proportions fit neatly on surface tops, while the contrasting light string inlay highlights the dark timber grain against any interior scheme.

During the 19th century in France, sewing baskets and work boxes were functional decorative accents for ladies parlours, crafted from fine timbers like rosewood to hold needlework tools and threads.

These items were constructed using dense rosewood, often featuring boxwood or bone stringing, geometric marquetry, and brass hardware for handles and hinges.

Authentic period pieces exhibit the deep grain and natural figure of rosewood, natural oxidisation on original brass components, and evidence of hand-cut joinery.

Place the basket on a sideboard top, desk, or open bookshelf as an accent piece or a stylish catch-all for small daily accessories.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free cloth, keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the veneer, and refrain from using harsh abrasive polishes on metal fittings.
