Mahogany

is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species.

Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress Mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual Mahogany was almost hidden from view.

Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect.

Although Mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ Mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ Mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments).

Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850's, this particular variety became all but extinct.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Slender ring-turned spindle legs: classic Sheraton revival pattern around the turn of the century.
Fine satinwood stringing to the tops: carefully inlaid box banding of the era.
Swept trestle bases on curved stretcher rails: construction designed for compact interlocking storage.
Moulded raised gallery edge on the largest table: typical Edwardian tea-table detailing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian nest of four tables dates from circa 1900 and exhibits an English Country House style. Constructed from dark brown mahogany with satinwood inlay, the set comprises four graduated rectangular tables that fit together beneath the largest top. Each table has a moulded edge on the top, fine line stringing, slender spindle-turned uprights, arched stretchers, and curved splayed feet. The surfaces show a clean, polished, and waxed finish. The tables measure 58 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 38 cm deep overall. Such a versatile piece functions well in a living room placed at the end of a sofa to serve tea or hold lamps and books, providing extra surface area when needed and sliding away compactly when space is required.

Nesting tables, historically known as quartetto tables when produced in sets of four, were introduced in the late eighteenth century by cabinetmakers such as Thomas Sheraton. They gained immense popularity during the Edwardian era as functional living room furniture designed for serving tea and entertaining guests while occupying minimal space.

Edwardian nesting tables were primarily crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood, often featuring subtle satinwood stringing or crossbanding. Construction typically includes slender turned spindle legs, side runners that allow smaller tables to slide beneath larger ones, and curved bridge stretchers at the base for structural support.

Authentic Edwardian pieces exhibit fine proportions, hand-cut dovetail joints on underlying supports, authentic wood patination, and smooth wear along the side runner channels. Genuine examples from circa 1900 display clean neoclassical lines, lightweight turned legs, and subtle wood inlay rather than heavy carving.

A nest of tables works well positioned at the end of a sofa or alongside an armchair, functioning as compact lamp tables. Individual tables can be pulled out and distributed across a living room during gatherings to accommodate drink trays or books without cluttering floor space.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the tables away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish fading.
