Description

This charming piece of folk art came from a wonderful private collection of decorative items - this slightly curved panel was probably one segment of a circular fairground stall or ride from the early part of the 20th Century. The combination of the artist's spontaneous approach to its floral decoration and the weathering to the paintwork from years of being exposed to the elements, has greatly increased its decorative appeal. The panel is being offered in its original state - its structurally sound, and as you can see, it still has its original metal fixings (perfectly positioned for hanging) . Desirability in the current decorative driven market is judged by an items ability to enhance a contemporary setting - we think this panel has all the elements to score highly. At its deepest point the frame sits approximately 9cm proud from wall.

Early twentieth-century fairground panels were hand-painted by itinerant artisans to decorate amusement rides, game booths, and showman wagons using vibrant pigments designed to attract crowds.

These pieces typically utilised dense softwood or timber panels primed with lead-based paints and decorated with oil-based signwriters pigments, often finished with protective clear varnishes.

Authenticity is determined by genuine surface craquelure, oxidisation of the paint layers, hand-mixed pigment palettes, and structural wear consistent with outdoor fairground use.

Mounting the piece as a standalone focal point on a neutral wall allows its historical texture and distressed patina to contrast effectively against modern minimalist aesthetics.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, dusting gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and avoiding chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners.
