Portfolio and print stands gained popularity in the 19th century as wealthy households amassed large collections of engravings, watercolours, and architectural folios that required safe storage and display.

Cabinet makers typically utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often featuring turned pedestals and brass castor fittings for mobility.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, traditional French polish finishes, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, and hand-turned wooden components rather than modern machine-tooled joints.

Such functional items serve well as practical display units for oversized art books, contemporary prints, or vinyl records within a study, living room, or hallway.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent wood splitting.
