This George III reading table takes the form of a music or reading stand constructed from flame mahogany with warm brown tones and a visible grain pattern. The octagonal top features canted corners, a slight bow, and a removable book rest, allowing use as an occasional table, supported by a ring-turned central column with a brass collar screw for height adjustment and reeded sabre legs forming a tripod base. Measuring 131 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 42.5 cm deep, this piece serves as a functional workspace or display surface in an empty corner of a gentleman's library, study, or living room.

Originating in 18th-century Britain, a George III reading table is a specialised piece of furniture featuring an adjustable central stem and angled surface designed to support books or manuscripts at a comfortable height.

These tables were commonly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, incorporating brass adjustment screws or ratchet mechanisms and supported by a turned column on a tripod base.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut threads on brass height adjustments, natural patination on the mahogany, irregular hand-carved details on the tripod legs, and period-appropriate hand-saw marks on the underside.

Position the piece in a reading corner beside an armchair, using the angled surface to display an open art book, atlas, or print to introduce historical character.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent drying.
