This pair of seventeenth-century wall reliefs consists of rectangular panels carved from dark brown oak, designed in a Gothic and Victorian revival style. Each piece displays figural relief carvings of saints standing beneath shell arches, flanked by fluted pilasters, with elaborate scrollwork and radiating fan motifs filling the upper background. The timber exhibits a warm mid-to-dark brown finish with visible grain patterns, natural knots, and subtle surface wear across the high relief figures and architectural mouldings. Every panel measures 48 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. These architectural wall panels are suitable for mounting above a sideboard or console table in a traditional dining room or hallway as decorative antique wall art.

FAQs

Carved oak panels from the 17th century are decorative timber reliefs originally created for architectural wall panelling, furniture fronts, or ecclesiastical interiors, frequently depicting religious figures, foliage, or architectural arches.

These panels were hand-carved from solid European oak using traditional gouges and chisels, often executed in high relief and set into mortise-and-tenon framed timber structures.

Authentic period panels exhibit hand-tool marks, uneven wear across high points, natural timber shrinkage along the grain, and a rich patina developed over centuries of wax polishing.

Mount these panels as tactile wall sculpture above a console or sideboard, allowing the dark carved oak to contrast against minimalist painted walls in contemporary spaces.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush. Apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once a year to nourish the wood and protect the surface patina.
