This William IV drop-leaf table derives from nineteenth-century English country house design. Constructed in warm brown mahogany, the rectangular top includes hinged flaps with half-round moulded edges and rounded corners, set above a pair of working drawers fitted with turned wooden knobs. The front displays keyhole escutcheons between the knobs, while the base comprises reeded turned legs terminating in brass cap castors, showing natural ageing across the timber surfaces. The piece measures 74 cm high, 36 cm wide and 58 cm deep. Positioned in a contemporary home, this compact side table serves as a functional surface placed at the end of a sofa or beside a seating arrangement in a living room or study. The drop-leaf design permits flexibility of surface area within smaller spaces, while the drawers provide discreet storage for household items. The traditional aesthetic integrates into period or eclectic interiors as an accent or occasional piece.

Produced during the reign of King William IV between 1830 and 1837, this style bridges Regency and early Victorian aesthetics. It features sturdy proportions, bold turned or reeded legs, rich mahogany timber, and restrained classical details.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or rosewood, with secondary timbers such as pine or oak used for drawer linings. Hardware generally included hand-cast brass castors, escutcheons, and turned wooden knobs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass castors, and period-appropriate secondary wood linings. Look for natural oxidisation on the underside of the timber and drop leaves that match the wood grain of the main top.

A drop-leaf table functions effectively as an end table beside a sofa or as a compact bedside unit. Folding down the side leaves allows it to fit into narrow spaces while retaining functional drawer storage.

Dust regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying out and uneven fading.
