This Edwardian gentleman's sword stick originates from the early twentieth century, hallmarked in London for 1909 with the maker's mark SHL. Formed from warm brown malacca cane, the walking stick displays a tapered shaft with a smooth turned wood construction, a silver collar cap handle, and a brass ferrule tip at the base. The piece measures 87 cm high, 4 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, holding a fullered, chromed, triangular blade that fits inside the haft. Positioned beside the front door in a traditional hallway or displayed within a gentleman's library, the cane serves as both a practical walking aid and a decorative historical object. The silver top bears an engraved armorial showing a swan's neck through a crown, completing the hardware details of the design. The cane rests in original condition alongside other traditional period pieces in a home setting.

A sword stick, or sword cane, is a walking cane containing a concealed blade, popular during the 18th and 19th centuries as a discreet defensive weapon for gentlemen.

Malacca cane is crafted from the stem of Calamus scipionum rattan, valued for its light weight and mottled brown appearance, frequently trimmed with silver caps and steel blades.

Authentic period examples feature hallmarked silver mounts, natural wood grain consistent with age, and precise friction-fit or twist-lock blade mechanisms.

Antique walking sticks are commonly displayed in a vintage brass umbrella stand near an entrance hall or mounted horizontally along a wall in a study.

Maintain the cane by applying beeswax polish to the wooden shaft, buffing the silver collar with a soft cloth, and keeping internal metal elements dry and lightly oiled.
