This Georgian occasional table from the 18th century consists of a dark brown mahogany supper table measuring 87 cm wide, 73 cm high and 87 cm deep. The circular top displays a central carved acanthus leaf rosette surrounded by eight circular dished recesses, interspersed with carved shell motifs along the scalloped edge. The tilt-top mechanism rests on a turned column above a bird cage saddle, supported by a tripod base with carved cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. Suited for traditional English country house interiors, the piece functions well in a fireplace alcove as a display surface or occasional table. It brings period character to a reception room or study when positioned near seating.

An 18th-century supper table, popular during the Georgian period, is a specialised tilt-top occasional table featuring carved dished recesses designed to hold plates, bowls, and cutlery during informal evening meals.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany, featuring a single-plank or joined circular top with hand-carved dished recesses, a central carved pedestal stem, and hand-dovetailed tripod cabriole legs.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-cut joinery, a tilt-top catch mechanism made of iron or brass, asymmetric hand carving, and appropriate timber shrinkage along the grain of the mahogany top.

Positioned against a wall with the top tilted vertically, the intricate hand carvings act as a sculptural focal point, or placed flat alongside seating as an occasional drink table.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth, applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes.
