This large Meissen serving platter dates from 1850 in the Rococo style and uses porcelain, enamel, and gold leaf in its construction. The piece has a glossy white glaze and an oval shape, measuring 43 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. The decoration includes a hand-painted yellow Western Yellow Wagtail bird perched on a branch in the centre, accompanied by colourful hand-painted insect motifs on a basketweave relief pattern rim bordered by a gold-painted edge. There are no signs of repair, and the finish shows intact hand-painted details. It sits securely on a small black stand for display. In a home today, this platter functions as a decorative serving piece or a striking display item on a sideboard top, bringing traditional European craftsmanship to dining rooms or living spaces. It coordinates well with English Country House interiors and adds a historic focal point to a room.

Meissen porcelain was established in Saxony in 1710 as the first hard-paste porcelain manufactory in Europe. Platters produced during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries frequently feature naturalistic themes, including detailed ornithological studies and insect motifs framed by moulded rims such as the Osier pattern.

Hard-paste porcelain is composed of kaolin and petuntse fired at high temperatures to create a vitrified, non-porous body. Designs are painted by hand using enamel pigments before a final firing, with gilded accents applied around the perimeter.

Authentic pieces generally bear the signature crossed swords mark hand-painted in cobalt blue under the glaze on the reverse side. Inspecting the precise quality of the hand-painted enamel decoration and the distinct moulded relief work helps verify genuine period manufacture.

A decorative porcelain platter can be positioned upright on a wooden plate stand atop a sideboard or mounted within a framed wall display. Combining period ceramics with minimalist modern furniture creates an intentional, curated contrast.

Hand wash the porcelain using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges that may scratch the enamel or gilding. Avoid placing antique hard-paste porcelain in modern dishwashers or soaking decorated pieces for extended periods.
