This nineteenth-century Qing Dynasty Chinese carved hardwood vase stand has a round form with a dark brown finish. A mottled pink and white marble top sits inset within the dark timber, bordered by a carved bead moulding. Below the top sits an intricate pierced carved apron depicting dense foliage and fruit motifs. The stand rests upon four heavily carved legs featuring animal mask details at the upper section and scrolled feet at the base, connected by a lower circular tier shelf. The piece measures 59 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this vase stand serves well in an empty corner as a display surface for decorative ceramics, trailing plants, or a table lamp. The compact footprint makes it practical for adding display space to smaller reception rooms, hallways, or a traditional gentleman's library.

FAQs

Chinese export stands from the late Qing period were crafted primarily for Western markets, featuring dense dark hardwoods, intricate pierced relief carving, and inset marble tops designed to hold ceramics, bronze urns, or bonsai.

These stands were typically carved from hardwoods such as rosewood (zitan or hongmu) or elm, paired with inset circular or octagonal slabs of Sichuan rose-pink or Dali white marble.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery without modern screws, natural age-related shrinkage lines near panel joints, original hand-chiseled undersides, and smooth surface wear on lower stretchers.

Designers use these dark wooden stands to provide vertical height in empty corners, bay windows, or beside low seating, styling them with contemporary ceramics, sculptural greenery, or table lamps.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly with a soft dry brush, apply natural beeswax polish sparingly to the wood surface, and wipe the marble top using a damp cloth without acidic chemicals.
