This Napoleon III centre table dates to 1890 and is constructed from ebonised wood with marquetry inlay and gilt bronze mounts. The black and gold piece measures 79 cm high, 123 cm wide, and 70 cm deep. The rectangular top has elaborate floral marquetry and an ormolu border, sitting above a single long drawer with similar floral ornamentation. The table stands on turned, tapered, and fluted legs decorated with ormolu mounts, joined by a shaped X-shaped stretcher with a central finial. In a modern home, this piece suits placement in the centre of a foyer or hallway as a decorative surface and storage point. The dark wood and contrasting gold-toned inlay create a distinct French Chateau aesthetic suitable for formal living spaces or reception areas.

FAQs

A centre table, or table a milieu, is a decorative table finished on all four sides so it can stand freely in the centre of a room rather than against a wall. Originating in French interior design, these pieces served as central focal points in drawing rooms, saloons, and foyers.

These tables typically feature solid timber frames veneered with dark or ebonised wood, detailed with intricate marquetry inlays using contrasting fruitwoods or brass. They are frequently trimmed with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and occasionally fitted with glass or marble tops.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century display hand-cut joinery, aged gilt-bronze mounts with natural oxidisation, and precise wood veneer inlay across all faces. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-planed timber surfaces and historical age marks.

Position the table in an entryway or foyer as a standalone architectural feature, or place it in a large living space behind a sofa. Contrast the elaborate classical ornamentation with understated contemporary lighting or clean-lined ceramics.

Position the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber veneers from warping or cracking. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax sparingly to preserve the finish without build-up on metal mounts.
