Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This antique French centre table dates from 1860 and follows the French Rococo Revival style. It combines materials including brass, tortoiseshell, ormolu, and ebonised wood in a palette of red, gold, and black. The piece incorporates a serpentine top with Boulle marquetry inlay, gilt-bronze ormolu mask mounts on the apron, cabriole legs, and a single drawer. Additional details visible include complex floral scrollwork patterns across the top and apron, curved leg profiles, and contrasting dark borders framing the inlaid panels. It measures 76 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 67 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a decorative surface in a principal reception room or hallway. It stands independently to display small ornamental items or functions as a central accent piece within a traditionally styled interior.

FAQs

Boulle marquetry was developed in 17th-century France by cabinetmaker Andre-Charles Boulle, who perfected the technique of inlaying brass and tortoiseshell into wood veneers. The style gained widespread popularity during the reign of Louis XIV and experienced major revivals throughout the 19th century.

Traditional Boulle construction utilizes a combination of sheet brass and natural red tortoiseshell set against an ebonised timber substrate. Decorative accents typically include cast gilt-bronze, also known as ormolu, for mounts, corner masks, and foot sabots.

Authentic pieces feature precision hand-cut brass and tortoiseshell patterns with flush surface transitions. Close inspection reveals natural organic variations in the tortoiseshell patterning alongside heavy, hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts fixed with period-correct fittings.

Positioning a Boulle centre table as a standalone statement piece allows its detailed marquetry to contrast with clean architectural lines. Pairing the dark tones of ebonised wood and warm brass with neutral wall colours creates a balanced visual anchor.

Maintain stable atmospheric humidity and temperature to prevent the metal inlay and tortoiseshell from lifting away from the timber core. Dust gently with a soft microfiber cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes, direct sunlight, or proximity to radiators.
