This nineteenth-century Indian sculpture is carved from wood and finished with gesso and polychrome pigment in yellow, ochre, and brown tones. The standing male figure wears traditional dress, featuring a carved topknot hairstyle, detailed facial hair, and a gestural arm posture with raised arms, mounted upon an integral rectangular plinth base. Considerable losses to the original paintwork reveal the underlying wooden construction across the surface, displaying a stable and non-flaking condition consistent with age. Measuring 95.25 cm high by 30.48 cm wide and 27.94 cm deep, this figural sculpture makes a striking display piece for positioning atop a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or study.

These carved wooden sculptures originate from various regions across India, created for religious shrines, domestic altars, or architectural adornments, featuring painted pigments applied over sculpted timber.

Craftsmen typically utilised indigenous hardwoods such as teak, mango wood, or rosewood, which were shaped using hand chisels before applying gesso layers and natural mineral pigments.

Authentic period pieces demonstrate organic paint loss across the polychrome layers, clear evidence of hand-carving marks, natural surface patination, and minor timber shrinkage consistent with age.

Placing a carved figure on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a deep bookshelf alcove introduces architectural texture and historical contrast into contemporary room schemes.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight, moisture, and central heating radiators to prevent wood warping; clean exclusively with a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid disturbing fragile pigment.
