Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Impressed capacity number on the collar: standard marking on Victorian shop counter jars.
Sprigged relief of a snuff taker: popular subject on 19th-century tobacco and snuff ceramics.
Moulded grapevine borders: relief detailing typical of Victorian press-moulded buff earthenware.
Hand-gilded shop banner: original commercial show lettering with period gold wear.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, glazed earthenware jars were used by tobacconists and domestic households to store powdered tobacco or snuff, keeping the contents protected from humidity.

These jars were typically thrown from local clay, finished with warm lead or salt glazes, and decorated with sprigged earthenware motifs or painted banners prior to firing.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate wear to the base, kiln marks, slight irregularities in the lead glaze, and raised sprigged decoration depicting figures or foliage.

Place the jar on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or sideboard alongside leather-bound books and brass accessories to add historical interest to the space.

Dust the surface gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water to protect fragile gilding and underlying earthenware.
