This French sculpture from the late 19th century or early 20th century depicts a young lady in an Art Deco style. The bust is carved from cream-coloured marble and alabaster, showing visible natural veining across the surface, a cloche cap with a decorative bow at the front, a draped collar over her shoulders, and small chips along the lower edge of the oval pedestal base. The piece measures 18 cm high, 18.5 cm wide and 12 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this sculpture suits placement on a mantelpiece or a console table in a living room, hallway or study. The compact proportions allow it to sit comfortably within smaller display spaces, while the carved details provide visual interest from multiple viewing angles. The neutral tone integrates easily with existing decorative schemes.

FAQs

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French sculptors frequently crafted decorative marble and alabaster busts depicting female figures wearing contemporary fashions, reflecting modern sensibilities and Art Deco styling.

Sculptors primarily used natural minerals such as fine-grained white marble, alabaster, or serpentine, which allowed for precise detail work and high-polish surface finishes.

Authentic period sculptures display hand-chiselled detailing, natural stone veining, subtle surface patination from age, and integrated carved bases or plinths.

Place the sculpture on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside muted modern ceramics or structured brass objects to contrast classic form with contemporary lines.

Dust gently using a clean, soft microfibre brush or cloth. Avoid harsh chemical detergents, acidic solutions, or excessive water, as stone materials are porous and prone to staining.
