Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Fossil-bearing black limestone top: natural slab with surface wear and edge softening.
Patterned brass collars and column bases: machine-chased metalwork typical of revival pieces.
Softwood backing timber with dark wash: timber preparation fits early 20th-century cabinet work.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Empire style console table dates from 1930. The piece is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, complemented by a black marble top flecked with white fossils, and finished with chased brass mounts on the column capitals and bases. The design incorporates a flame mahogany apron, turned column front legs, straight rear legs, and a solid lower plinth base with projecting front corners. Visible details include impressed marks on the columns and some veneer damage on the plinth. The furniture stands 86.5 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 40.5 cm deep. Placed beside the front door, this console table provides a practical surface for everyday items in a hallway or entryway. The narrow footprint fits well against a wall in reception rooms or living areas, offering a surface for lamps, decorative objects, or correspondence.

FAQs

Originating in the early nineteenth century during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, French Empire furniture is characterised by neoclassical symmetry, architectural columns, heavy dark woods like mahogany, and classical brass or ormolu mounts.

These pieces traditionally feature solid or veneered mahogany frames, heavy marble tops such as Belgian Black or Saint Anne marble, and cast brass or gilded bronze fittings.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, thick timber veneers, unpolished undersides of marble slabs, original gilt-bronze chiseled mounts, and strict architectural proportions.

Position the table in an entryway or hallway paired with contemporary artwork above the marble top to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist modern design.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax annually along the grain. Clean the marble top using a stone-safe, neutral cleaner, avoiding acidic chemicals that cause etching.
