This small late 19th-century French Empire style console table uses mahogany, a black marble top, and bronze mounts in a warm brown tone. The piece has a rectangular form with a single frieze drawer fitted with an ornate cast brass laurel leaf mount, supported by four cylindrical column legs with brass capitals and bases, and includes a lower rectangular undertier shelf. Past damage to the marble top has been professionally repaired with visible glue lines across the dark surface. Measuring 77 cm high by 66 cm wide and 39 cm deep, the table stands on circular stepped feet. In a contemporary home, this compact console table fits well in a narrow hallway beside the front door as a drop zone for keys and mail, or functions as a decorative side table in a living room or bedroom against a wall. The dark veined marble surface provides a durable resting place for lamps or small decorative items while the lower shelf offers additional display space for books or small boxes.

Emerging during Napoleon Bonapartes reign in the early nineteenth century, Empire style furniture features Neoclassical architectural influences, symmetrical proportions, heavy dark woods, marble tops, and gilt-bronze accents.

These tables are traditionally constructed using mahogany or walnut veneers over solid hardwood frames, frequently topped with dark marble slabs and decorated with cast brass or ormolu mounts.

Authenticity indicators include hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, thick cut wood veneers, natural marble tops with aged undersides, and classical column supports finished with metallic collar mounts.

Position the table against a wall in an entryway or hallway to display a simple table lamp, small ceramics, or framed artwork, contrasting rich historical wood tones with contemporary background paint.

Clean the marble with a neutral pH stone cleaner, dust the mahogany frame regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and preserve brass mounts by avoiding harsh polishing agents that strip original patination.
