Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Thick fossiliferous marble slab with squared edges: characteristic French quarry production.
Swept console legs resting on block feet: mid-nineteenth-century French design.
Deep figured walnut veneer across the frieze: cut timber before modern rotary peeling.
Scratches and light scuffs to the lower tier: honest handling over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Empire console table comes in walnut with a grey marble top and a medium brown finish. The thick slab top displays visible white veining, resting above a plain frieze drawer and scrolled front supports. A lower plinth undertier provides a stable shelf for display, anchored by moulded rectangular feet on a dark gravel surface. The visible timber shows warm grain patterns across the walnut surfaces alongside minor natural surface wear consistent with age and use. Standing at approximately 90 cm wide, 45 cm deep, and 75 cm high, the proportion suits placement beside the front door or within a hallway setting. In a modern home, this piece functions well as a decorative hallway console for placing keys and small everyday items, or serves as a surface in a living room against a wall. The construction combines traditional joinery with classic architectural styling, providing a practical furnishing for transitional and classic interior spaces.

FAQs

Console tables from this era typically feature heavy grey or white marble tops, rich walnut or mahogany veneers, robust scrolled front supports, and a flat lower plinth undertier designed to sit flush against a perimeter wall.

These tables were constructed using solid hardwood framing layered with figured walnut veneers, paired with thick slabs of natural grey or black veined marble, and finished with brass or iron internal hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-saw mark variations on the underside of the marble slab, original hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, and natural age-related patination on the timber finish.

Position the console table in an entryway or formal hallway beneath a modern oil painting or gilded mirror, pairing the heavy marble surface with minimalist ceramics to contrast historical craft with modern design.

Maintain the walnut finish by applying beeswax polish along the wood grain and keeping the table away from direct radiators, while wiping the marble surface immediately with a damp cloth if non-pH-neutral liquids are spilled.
