French Wrought Iron and Marble Top Console Table

1900 - 1920
Description

Good decorative French painted wrought iron and marble top console table, circa 1920.

The wrought iron is painted in a French grey green and compliments the figured marble top.

The shaped and edged marble top is in good condition and has both of its back corners (2cm) cut at an angle, which I assume was for it to fit into a dado rail or wall frame moulding at some point. Nothing of any concern, but just mentioning it.

The wrought iron base is simply made and if you are not keen on the colour, it can be painted any colour you like…priced as you see it here though!

Stands well and with many uses this console will work anywhere, also handy if you don’t want a “heavy” looking wood console table for a smaller hall way for example.

Measurements:

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French wrought iron console tables emerged prominently in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, combining hand-forged ironwork frames with polished stone surfaces like marble. They were crafted primarily for entryways, vestibules, and garden terraces, reflecting classic curvilinear and scroll motifs characteristic of French provincial architecture.

Traditional construction paired solid wrought iron, heated and shaped by hand into decorative scrolls, with slabs of natural marble or limestone. The ironwork was often painted or left to acquire a natural surface oxidisation over time.

Authentic pieces display hand-hammered joinery, rivets, or visible manual welds rather than modern uniform machine seams. The marble tops often feature natural veining, hand-bevelled edges, and weight-fitted contours that align directly with the iron support frame.

Position the console table against a neutral wall in a hallway or foyer to serve as an architectural focal point. Combine the cold stone and textured metal base with organic decor, such as earthenware vessels or understated framed artwork, to balance structural lines.

Clean the marble surface using a pH-neutral cleaner designed for natural stone, ensuring spills are wiped immediately to prevent absorption. Dust the wrought iron frame regularly with a soft cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax to painted metalwork to protect against moisture.
