This English Victorian games table dates to circa 1880 and takes the form of a fold-over card table in rosewood. The dark brown timber displays warm caramel hues and attractive grain interest, contrasted by boxwood line inlay bordering the playing surface. The folding top rotates through ninety degrees and opens to a green baize lining, positioned above a deep apron and an under tier with a pierced fretwork gallery. Turned supports and slender legs with foliate marquetry finish the frame, moving on brass and ceramic castors. Measuring 75.5 cm high, 84.5 cm wide and 46 cm deep when closed, the piece provides a practical surface for card games or general display. It is well suited to use in a drawing room, study, or lounge as a sofa table behind seating, combining traditional gentleman's club gaming appeal with compact proportions for modern interiors.

FAQs

Fold-over card tables became popular in English homes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to accommodate social card games such as whist and bridge. Designed with hinged tops that double in size when opened, these tables served as compact occasional tables when closed and functional gaming surfaces when unfolded.

Nineteenth-century English games tables were typically crafted from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, frequently featuring fine marquetry or satinwood inlay. The playing interior is traditionally lined with wool felt or baize to protect playing cards and facilitate smooth gameplay.

Authentic Victorian examples often feature hand-cut joinery, period brass hinges, turned or spiral-carved leg details, and original brass castors. Look for subtle signs of age on the timber, historical wear to the baize lining, and original swivel or fold-over mechanisms beneath the tabletop.

A Victorian fold-over card table functions well as an occasional side table behind a sofa, in a reading nook, or positioned against an entryway wall when folded closed. Unfolded, it can be styled as a dedicated games space in a study or library alongside classic armchairs.

Keep the timber dusted with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually along the grain. Avoid placing hot items or liquids directly onto the wood, and clean the interior baize lining using a light brush or low-suction vacuum attachments.
