This late 19th-century Italian Neoclassical Grand Tour tazza takes the form of a carved off-white alabaster vessel standing 31 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 13.5 cm deep. The piece comprises a deep fluted bowl with a lobed body and scroll handles supported by expressive satyr heads on each side. A turned waisted socle connects the bowl to a heavy oval pedestal base adorned with carved floral swags, garlands, and leaf moulding. In a contemporary home, this decorative object suits display on a mantelpiece or side table to bring classical ornamentation to an interior space. The off-white stone material shows subtle natural veining across the turned elements and sculptural details. The sturdy tiered plinth supports the elevated bowl securely, presenting a balanced silhouette typical of the Grand Regency design aesthetic.

A tazza is a shallow, footed bowl or dish elevated on a central stem or pedestal. During the 18th and 19th centuries, travellers on the European Grand Tour acquired carved stone tazzas in Italy as classical souvenirs based on Greco-Roman motifs.

Neoclassical tazzas were predominantly hand-carved from soft natural stones such as alabaster, marble, porphyry, or serpentine. Alabaster was especially favoured in central Italy due to its fine grain, ease of carving, and translucent white-to-cream appearance.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving techniques, including minor asymmetry, hand-chiseled undersides, and micro-grooves within low-relief areas. Natural aging manifests as slight surface yellowing, light patination in crevasses, and minimal calcification along unpolished edges.

Place the object as a focal element on a fireplace mantelpiece, dining table, or entryway console. Its architectural geometry pairs well with contemporary minimalist surfaces, dark timber sideboards, or traditional book-filled display shelves.

Clean alabaster using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristle brush to remove dust from relief details. Avoid contact with water or liquid cleaners, as alabaster is water-soluble and porous, and keep away from high moisture areas.
