Antique Edwardian Mahogany Extending Dining Table | by Goodalls

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique Edwardian Chippendale style extending dining table in mahogany by Goodalls of Manchester, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of excellent quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship.

The table pulls apart on sliding runners to take an additional leaf, extending it comfortably from a family table into one for entertaining, and bears the original Goodalls 'Designers & Manufacturers, Manchester' plaque to the frame.

The rounded-end top has a moulded edge above a frieze carved all round with a Vitruvian scroll, and it stands on four cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaves to the knees, ending in ball and claw feet.

The mahogany displays a rich figured grain and a deep, warm colour with a lovely patina.

This Edwardian extending dining table originates from the period in mahogany by Goodalls of Manchester. The timber exhibits a deep, warm brown colour with a rich figured grain and a moulded edge around the rounded-end top. Below the top sits a carved frieze decorated with a continuous Vitruvian scroll motif. The piece is supported by four cabriole legs, featuring prominent acanthus leaf carving at the knees and terminating securely in traditional ball-and-claw feet. Additional hidden central support legs sit beneath the frame. Measuring 76.5 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 143 cm deep when closed, the table extends outwards on sliding runners to accommodate extra guests for dinner parties. The classic silhouette and sturdy construction suit placement within a formal dining room or a traditional English country house interior, functioning primarily for daily family meals and hosting gatherings.

An Edwardian extending dining table typically features refined proportions, rich timbers such as mahogany, and mechanical extension systems to accommodate additional leaves for hosting.

High-grade solid mahogany and mahogany veneers were widely favoured, often paired with brass castors and cast-iron winding mechanisms for structural integrity and smooth operation.

Authentic pieces display period-accurate construction techniques such as hand-cut joinery, stamped maker marks on the underside, and natural patination along the extending runners.

Pair dark timber with contemporary upholstered dining chairs or a minimalist neutral rug to balance the visual weight and highlight the carved leg detailing.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and intense sunlight, clean spills immediately with a damp cloth, and apply natural beeswax periodically along the grain.
