Large Antique Georgian Regency Mahogany Tilt Top Rectangular Dining Table C1800

18th century
Description

Large Georgian Mahogany Cross-Banded Tilt top Pedestal Dining Table C1800

An Outstanding sympathetically restored 6 Seater Tilt Top Dining Table.

We bring to you this impressive Georgian tilt-top dining table dating to circa 1800, constructed from rich Mahogany and offering unusually generous proportions for a single-pedestal design. The rectangular top features rounded corners and displays finely figured timber enclosed by Ebony stringing and a wide Mahogany cross-banded border.

Raised on a heavy, ring-turned "honey dipper" central pillar, the table is supported by four splayed, reeded legs terminating in their original brass cap castors, which have been lightly polished and remain fully operational, running smoothly and allowing the table to be moved with ease.

The piece has undergone sympathetic restoration in our workshop, including the careful re-polishing of the top where we have skill-fully preserved its desirable, lightly faded honey Mahogany tone, ensuring it harmonises beautifully alongside period dining chairs. To ensure absolute structural stability, the central pillar has been glued and re-wedged, resulting in a solid, tight frame with no movement in the joints, while the top itself remains remarkably flat. Unlike many tilt-top examples, the top is non-removable, swinging smoothly on its pivot mechanism and locking down securely into place with zero movement or play in the mechanism, securing with a satisfying click from its original brass banjo snap latch.

Measuring 134cm long by 105cm deep, its generous scale comfortably seats up to six chairs for formal dining while serving equally well as a central breakfast table for everyday use. Offered in home-ready condition, it provides great versatility, tilting vertically to save floor space when not in use.

This item is in outstanding restored condition as shown by the photographs however being an antique item of this age there are blemishes and scuffs here and there which we feel adds to its originality and heritage.

Please note: chairs shown in photographs are for scale and illustration purposes only and are not included with the table, though they are available to purchase separately from our shop at the time of listing.

This large Georgian dining table from circa 1800 is made from mahogany with a warm brown finish. It belongs to the grand Regency style, constructed with a rectangular top featuring rounded corners, a crossbanded border, and ebony stringing. The table stands on a heavy ring-turned central pedestal column supported by four reeded sabre legs with brass cap castors. Measuring 72 cm high, 134 cm wide, and 105 cm deep, the table seats up to six people for formal dining or everyday breakfasts. The top tilts vertically on its pivot mechanism to save space when not in use, making it suitable as a central breakfast table or dining table in a home today.

A Regency tilt-top dining table is a piece of British dining furniture from the early 19th century, designed with a central pedestal stem and a hinged mechanism that allows the tabletop to pivot vertically for compact storage when not in use.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid and veneered mahogany timber, frequently accented with flame mahogany crossbanding, turned central columns, reeded sabre legs, and brass castors.

Authentic period examples feature original brass snap-table latches beneath the surface, hand-cut joinery, reeded quadruped or tripod bases, and aged brass box castors on the legs.

A period dining table can be balanced in modern interiors by pairing it with contemporary dining chairs, placing it beneath a minimalist pendant lighting fixture, or using it as a central focus in a large entrance hall.

Maintain the mahogany surface by applying natural wax polish sparingly once or twice a year, wiping up liquids immediately, and keeping the table away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight to prevent timber movement.
