Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French three-fold screen serves as a dressing screen or room divider. Dating from 1910 and styled in the Rococo Revival taste, it comprises a walnut frame with giltwood elements and hand-decorated panels. Each panel displays a pastoral scene at the top, a musical trophy in the centre, and floral swags, bouquets, and scrollwork throughout, joined together by metal hinges. Carved cresting crowns the top of each fold, while delicate painted motifs adorn the warm brown timber surface down to patterned lower sections and shaped feet. Measuring 191 cm high and 165 cm wide, the screen stands upright to partition space effectively. It suits placement in an empty corner, a bedroom as a dressing screen, or a living area as a room divider to create zones within an interior.

FAQs

Rococo Revival folding screens, popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, draw inspiration from 18th-century French design. They feature intricate C-scroll carvings, shell motifs, floral garlands, and hand-painted central panels depicting pastoral scenes or classical allegories.

These screens were commonly constructed with dense hardwood frames such as walnut, mahogany, or beech. The inner panels typically comprised painted canvas, timber boards, or textile inserts, linked together by double-acting brass hinges.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate joinery, natural timber patination, and age-consistent wear on hinge attachment points. Hand-painted panels often exhibit fine surface craquelure, while original brass hardware shows natural oxidisation.

A multi-panel folding screen functions effectively as a decorative backdrop, a partition to delimit open-plan living zones, or a headboard alternative behind a bed. The warm wood tones and classical painted artwork provide contrast within minimalist or contemporary settings.

Dust timber frames regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid direct sunlight or proximity to radiators to prevent wood warping and paint flaking. Apply a neutral beeswax polish to the carved wooden frame annually, avoiding painted surfaces.
