MotifsTilt-top mechanism, Turned pedestal, Tripod base, Pad feet

This Georgian occasional table uses solid oak with a warm brown timber colour and shows a natural grain pattern across its circular top. The design includes a three-plank wooden surface mounted onto a central turned pedestal column supported by three curved tripod legs terminating in pad feet. The tilt-top mechanism allows the table surface to rotate vertically for upright storage against a wall and drop down flat when required for use. Surface marks and varied coloration across the timber indicate age, wear, and previous handling over time. Practical size descriptions remain omitted here since specific measurements are not provided for the listing. Placed at the end of a sofa or beside a chair in a living room, study, or hallway, the table provides a convenient surface for holding drinks, books, or lamps while adding traditional English country house character to interior spaces.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th century, a tilt top table features a hinged top mechanism that allows the surface to rotate vertically when not in use, enabling compact storage against a wall in Georgian interiors.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring hand-turned central pillars, metal or wooden catch latches, and three-legged tripod bases for stability.

Authentic period examples display hand-planed undersides, hand-forged iron or brass catches, slightly irregular hand-turned columns, and natural surface patination consistent with age.

Position the table alongside an armchair as a functional side table for lamps and books, or store it with the top tilted vertically in a corner to highlight the wood grain as a decorative feature.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year along the timber grain, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to avoid timber drying.
