This early 20th-century tea trolley is constructed from solid dark brown oak with a figured grain and a warm, rich colour. The traditional English country house design incorporates two tiers with raised tray edges, square upright legs with rounded tops acting as handles, and fine bead moulding along the long edges, complemented by small dark metal castors. The oak surfaces display a natural aged patina. Measuring 79 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 40.5 cm deep, this practical piece serves multiple functions in a modern home. It works well for serving afternoon tea or drinks in a living room or dining room, acts as a side table beside a sofa or bed, or fits neatly into an empty corner to hold display items.

FAQs

Developed prominently in the early twentieth century, an oak tea trolley is a mobile serving table featuring two or three tiers designed to transport tea services and refreshments within dining and drawing rooms.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from solid oak or oak veneers, constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and fitted with small brass or iron castor wheels for mobility.

Authentic period trolleys feature functional castor wheels, visible wood grain, hand-cut joinery or traditional fixings beneath the lower tiers, and surface patina consistent with light operational use.

An antique tea trolley works as a portable bar cart styled with crystal glassware and decanters, or as a flexible side table displaying art books and potted greenery.

Dust regularly using a soft, lint-free cloth, keep the castor mechanisms clean to ensure fluid movement, and apply a clear beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain to preserve the timber finish.
