This pair of large Victorian Stourbridge glass lamp shades dates from around 1890 in the Victorian style. Each shade exhibits a bulbous form with a broad flared rim, an opalescent sheen, and a pale blue translucent finish. The glass has an optic texture, showing subtle fluting throughout the body, and terminates in a frilled wavy lower rim. The top opening features a plain collar designed for fitting to a light fixture. One shade shows minor nibbles to the rim, while both remain in very good original condition. The dimensions are 21 cm in width, 10 cm in opening width, and 17.5 cm in height. These decorative lighting accessories are suitable for restoring antique gas or electric light fixtures in a domestic interior.

Victorian Stourbridge glass shades are 19th-century lighting accessories crafted in the West Midlands glassmaking hub of England, characterized by milky or iridescent opalescent finishes and organic forms such as frilled or flared rims.

These shades were hand-blown using specific chemical compositions containing bone ash or fluorides, which reacted to heat treatment to produce varying densities of opacity and a shimmering, translucent sheen.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle hand-finished variations, ground or finished fitter rims where the shade connects to the light gallery, and characteristic heat-reactive opalescence that displays a blue tint in reflected light and a warm hue in transmitted light.

These shades can be fitted onto modern pendant cords, wall sconces, or brass lamp bases to create a striking point of interest that contrasts delicate historical craftsmanship with contemporary design elements.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and wash gently in lukewarm water using mild dish soap when necessary; avoid hot water, abrasive scourers, or chemical solvents to prevent stress cracks or surface damage.
