These French neoclassical column pedestals date from 1920 and are made of solid hardwood with a warm honey-brown finish, showing a prominent natural wood grain and patination. Each near-pair stand consists of a square capital top, a doric capital above a fluted cylindrical column shaft, and a moulded square base. The timber displays visible vertical grain patterns, rounded turned rings beneath the top block, and subtle variations in colour across the turned surfaces. Each pedestal measures 76 cm high and 22 cm squared. In a modern interior, these pedestals provide a classic display surface for sculptures, lamps, or decorative objects. They suit placement in an empty corner, hallway, or living room to add architectural interest and elevation to displayed items.

FAQs

Neoclassical column pedestals are freestanding support structures inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture. They typically incorporate classical order details such as fluted shafts, turned capitals, and square plinth bases.

French pedestals from this era were primarily constructed using durable hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or fruitwood. Construction often involved hand-turned woodworking, carved fluting, and traditional joinery techniques.

Authentic pieces from the 1920s show subtle hand-finishing details, natural wood grain variations, and evidence of historical hand-lathe work. Near pairs often exhibit minor individual dimension variations due to hand craftmanship.

Column pedestals are used to introduce vertical interest and architectural structure into modern spaces. They serve as elevated platforms for displaying marble busts, ceramic vases, bronze sculptures, or trailing indoor plants.

Hardwood pedestals should be dusted regularly using a soft, dry cloth. Periodic application of a natural beeswax polish preserves the timber finish, while placing them away from direct heat sources prevents wood movement.
