Pre 16th century
For Sale by Textile Antiques
Description

England, last quarter of the 15th century

Christ is depicted here as in many Gothic representations of the Last Judgement, seated on a rainbow arc with a seraph at each end, his palms raised and his wounds displayed and a crossed halo around his head. Embroidered in coloured silks in split stitch, satin stitch and laid silk with trellis couching, and silver threads in brick stitch, eyelet stitch and underside couching, on a linen ground. The figure probably decorated the hood of a cope. With losses to the silk.

This pre-sixteenth century medieval Gothic textile wall art piece presents a panel of opus anglicanum measuring 40 cm high by 31.6 cm wide. A seated holy figure sits centrally with raised hands and a crossed halo, flanked by a seraph at each end in a traditional composition on a blue fabric backing. The embroidery utilises metallic thread and coloured silk, showing visible losses to the silk across the surface. A gilded foliate frame encloses the textile, featuring intricate carved scrollwork decoration along the wide wooden moulding. Positioned above a sideboard, the artwork brings historical character into a home interior today. The scene employs rich tones of blue and gold against the neutral background of the linen ground and metal threads. The piece demonstrates the traditional technique of underside couching and detailed stitching styles typical of English ecclesiastical needlework from this period. The rectangular gilded frame displays subtle texture and a warm metallic finish suitable for display in a traditional study or living space.

Opus Anglicanum, translating from Latin as English work, refers to needlework produced in medieval England, renowned for complex silk and metallic thread embroidery.

These panels typically utilised silver-gilt thread, silk yarns, and linen backing fabric, constructed using split stitch and underside couching techniques.

Authentication involves examining specific stitch structures such as underside couching, analysing thread composition under magnification, and assessing natural wear patterns on the textile ground.

Displaying framed textile art on a neutral wall or alongside classical portraits creates a focal point in traditional, gothic, or eclectic interiors.

Keep framed textiles away from direct sunlight and moisture sources, utilizing UV-protective glass and conservation-grade mounting materials to prevent fabric breakdown.
