Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian Neoclassical serving tea tray dates from 1880 and possesses an octagonal form with a warm brown mahogany body, a shaped gallery edge, and rolled brass carrying handles at each end. The central satinwood and boxwood marquetry panel depicts twin winged griffins flanking a classical urn, complemented by floral scrollwork. Clear visual elements include the distinct grain of the timber, the polished brass handles mounted to the sides, and the contrasting light wood inlay against the dark wood background. Measuring 5 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, the tray rests on a white display surface. Practical for everyday modern use or decorative display, the tray fits well atop a sideboard, coffee table, or dining table for serving beverages or holding decorative accessories. The compact and portable design makes it straightforward to transport items or rearrange displays within a dining room, living area, or hallway. The rich timber tones and classical motifs integrate smoothly with traditional and eclectic interior schemes.

FAQs

A 19th-century marquetry tea tray is a shallow wooden serving vessel decorated with contrasting wood veneers arranged to form complex classical, geometric, or floral patterns.

These trays typically feature a primary hardwood base such as mahogany or walnut, embellished with boxwood, satinwood, or rosewood inlays and fitted with cast brass handles.

Authentic period trays demonstrate light wood shrinkage along the grain, precise hand-cut veneer joints, age-appropriate patination on brass hardware, and hand-applied varnish or French polish finishes.

An antique marquetry tray can be placed on a coffee table, sideboard top, or ottoman to anchor smaller decorative items, decanters, or books, adding warmth and historical texture.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft dry cloth, keep the tray away from direct sunlight and heat sources, wipe away moisture immediately, and treat occasionally with a clear beeswax polish.
