This Arts and Crafts golden oak bachelors dining table dates from 1890 in the English Country House style. The timber has a warm golden brown colour with a clear finish, displaying natural distressing and a smooth surface patina. The rectangular top is supported by straight square legs and incorporates two drop-leaf flaps on hinges along the sides. Each end features a distinctive pierced cutout motif depicting naturalistic mushroom designs within a framed panel. The table stands 73 cm high by 105 cm wide and 33 cm deep when closed, making it exceptionally compact. In a modern interior, this practical space-saving table functions well in a small apartment dining room, hallway or studio. The drop leaves fold down to sit flush against the narrow base when floor space is limited, and open outward to accommodate guests for meals. The sturdy construction and traditional Liberty-associated design suit both period and contemporary settings seeking functional wooden furniture with historic character.

Originating in the late 19th century as a reaction against industrial mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasized honest craftsmanship, native timbers like oak, traditional joinery, and stylized organic or geometric cutouts.

Furniture makers primarily used solid native hardwoods such as English oak, walnut, or mahogany, constructed using pegged mortise and tenon joints and solid brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible grain patterns, hand-cut joinery, cut-out decorative motifs such as heart or plant shapes, and an unvarnished or wax-polished original finish showing natural age and patina.

With its narrow footprint when collapsed, a bachelor table serves effectively as a hallway console, side table, or compact breakfast table paired with contemporary neutral seating.

Clean the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
