Antique Large 20th Century Oak Dining Table | Seats Eight

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century refectory dining table in solid oak, a substantial and handsome piece of excellent quality, showcasing fine traditional joinery and a pleasing hand-finished character.

The generous rectangular plank top comfortably seats eight, with softly rounded corners and a thick, chunky edge.

It stands on a pair of crossed X-frame trestle ends with shaped feet, joined by a long central stretcher secured with traditional wedged through-tenons, with tooled detail to the legs in the Arts & Crafts manner.

The oak displays a striking open grain, with lovely medullary ray figure across the top, and a warm honey colour with an attractive natural patina.

Sturdy and practical, it is ideal for a farmhouse kitchen or dining room. Presented in good vintage condition, with marks consistent with age and use. A very desirable oak refectory table, a perfect addition to any dining room or country interior.

An antique 20th century refectory dining table in solid oak, designed in the Arts and Crafts style, features a warm honey colour with a striking open grain and a thick, chunky rectangular plank top with softly rounded corners. It stands on crossed X-frame trestle ends with shaped feet, joined by a long central stretcher secured with wedged through-tenons, and displays tooled detail to the legs along with a natural patina and marks consistent with age and use. The table measures 74.5 cm high, 80 cm wide and 200 cm deep, providing generous seating for eight. Suitably robust for daily family life, it integrates well into a dining room or country kitchen as a practical surface for meals and gatherings. The traditional joinery and substantial construction make it an enduring centrepiece for interior spaces that incorporate vintage and rustic furnishings.

A trestle dining table consists of a horizontal tabletop supported by two vertical or angled trestle end frames, which are connected by a central horizontal stretcher for stability.

Tables from this period are constructed from solid oak timber utilizing traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged fastenings, and heavy central stretchers.

Authentic period pieces feature natural timber patination, solid wood construction without synthetic veneers, visible joinery techniques, and uniform wear consistent with historical use.

Pairing a substantial timber table with contemporary upholstered chairs or minimalist lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical woodwork and modern design elements.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, and avoid direct exposure to heat sources or standing moisture.
