This nineteenth-century Staffordshire pearlware ceramic figure represents a Medici lion in a Georgian style. The earthenware piece has a hand-painted ochre body with a brown mane, a greyish muzzle, and one paw resting on a yellow sphere, standing upon a moulded green and brown glazed mound base. The glaze shows visible crazing across the surface. The figure measures 10 cm in height. Placed upon a mantelpiece in an English country house interior, this ceramic sculpture brings a traditional folk art aesthetic to a room. It adds a decorative accent to a shelf, cabinet, or display table. The compact model integrates easily into existing arrangements of ornamental ceramics and historical figurines without taking up much surface area.

FAQs

Staffordshire Pearlware Medici lions are ceramic figures produced in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, inspired by the Renaissance marble sculptures at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. These pottery pieces featured a blue-tinted cobalt lead glaze over white earthenware, representing classic Regency and Georgian decorative styling.

Pearlware is a refined earthenware body incorporating cobalt oxide in the lead glaze to produce a whiter surface finish compared to earlier creamware. Hand-applied oxide pigments and enamels were used for colour, accompanied by distinctive lead-glazed bases in green, brown, and ochre tones.

Authentic period examples typically exhibit a slight bluish pooling of glaze in crevices and underneath the base, alongside evidence of hand-moulding and hand-painted application. Genuine early pieces display fine glaze crazing, light friction wear to the unglazed foot rim, and a light weight consistent with hollow earthenware casting.

Position the ceramic lion on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard top alongside leather-bound volumes or brass objects to add warmth and historic texture. The earthy ochre and green glazes complement traditional dark timber furniture as well as contemporary neutral colour palettes.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristle brush to avoid scratching delicate glazes or remaining enamels. Avoid immersing the figure in water or using harsh chemical solvents, as liquid can penetrate existing glaze crazing and discolour the internal earthenware body.
