This French provincial side table from 1850 exemplifies a French Chateau design vibe. It combines an elm plank top in warm brown tones with a wooden base, featuring a shaped frieze fitted with a single drawer and a small wooden knob handle. The structure is supported by four slender cabriole legs. Visible details include distinct wood grain textures, knots on the top surface, and natural signs of age across the timber. Measuring 60 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 61 cm deep of low proportions, the piece serves as a functional accent item. In a modern interior, this side table fits well at the end of a sofa in a living room, providing a convenient surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. Its compact dimensions allow it to sit comfortably in smaller spaces or hallways as a statement storage piece. The versatile warm brown palette complements various traditional and rustic room schemes without overpowering existing furniture arrangements.

FAQs

French Provincial furniture originated in the regions outside Paris during the eighteenth century, adapting the elegant forms of Parisian court styles into functional, simplified designs for rural homes.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised native European hardwoods such as oak, walnut, cherry, and fruitwood, relying on traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and wooden pegs.

Authentic period examples display hand-hewn construction marks, pegged joints, slight irregularities in symmetry, original timber patination, and wear consistent with historic usage.

Pair the table with modern upholstered seating, contrasting the warm patinated timber with clean linen fabrics and modern table lamps to create a balanced scheme.

Dust regularly using a dry microfiber cloth, apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat.
