What are the characteristics of French provincial side tables?

French provincial side tables typically feature cabriole legs, scalloped aprons, and understated proportions crafted from native hardwoods such as oak or walnut.

What materials were traditionally used in 20th-century French oak side tables?

These tables were primarily constructed from solid oak, using pegged jointing alongside hand-finished surface techniques.

How can you identify authentic French oak side tables from the 20th century?

Authentic pieces feature mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in grain texture, and signs of wear on the feet and tabletop perimeter.

How can a French oak side table be styled in modern interiors?

Position the table beside a sofa or accent chair, pairing the dark oak timber with textured wool textiles or a modern table lamp.

How should you clean and maintain an antique oak side table?

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually to protect the timber.
