This nineteenth-century Georgian side table takes the form of an English country house butler’s tray, fashioned from warm brown mahogany. The piece stands on an X-frame folding base with turned legs, supporting a rectangular tray top equipped with hinged drop sides secured by brass flush hinges. Four cutout hand holes punctuate the edges of the tray. Surface wear indicates the item remains in original condition. The table measures 68 cm high, 73 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. In a modern interior, this functional item serves well at the end of a sofa to hold drinks or books. The folding design allows for flexible placement and straightforward storage when not in use.

FAQs

A butlers tray table is a portable piece of occasional furniture comprising a removable or integrated serving tray with cutout handles and hinged sides, resting upon a folding X-frame stand.

Traditional period examples were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, paired with brass flush hinges for the gallery sides and mortise-and-tenon joints for the frame.

Authentic period examples often feature hand-dovetailed gallery edges, heavy original brass hinges, hand-carved handle cutouts, and uniform patination across timber surfaces.

This versatile table works effectively as a compact home bar or drinks station, a adaptable side table beside seating, or a decorative display surface in an entryway.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a coat of beeswax paste annually, while shielding the surface from direct heat and moisture.
