This antique French Empire console table dates from 1870. The piece is constructed from walnut with boxwood and brass details, showing a warm brown timber colour with contrasting inlaid stringing across the frieze and legs. The rectangular top has a cross-banded edge above two frieze drawers fitted with brass starburst knobs and a central bronze frieze mount, standing on tapered curved legs at the front. The table measures 84 cm high, 94 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. It functions as an elegant display or storage surface positioned beside the front door in a hallway or entryway, offering practical surface space in a traditional home interior.

French Empire furniture originated during the early nineteenth century under Napoleon Bonaparte. It is characterised by neoclassical geometry, rich wood veneers such as walnut or mahogany, and ornate brass or bronze mountings depicting classical motifs.

These tables typically feature solid hardwood frames topped with figure-grained walnut or mahogany veneers. Decorative elements frequently incorporate cast brass or bronzed mounts, boxwood inlay, and hand-cut joinery within the drawer frieze.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand craftsmanship, including hand-sawn drawer dovetails, unrefined backboards, and natural oxidisation on brass metalwork. The patination on walnut veneers should also exhibit soft colour variation consistent with age.

A French Empire table functions well in contemporary hallways or living spaces when paired with clean-lined modern art or a minimalist mirror mounted above. The warm wood grain and dark tones ground lighter modern colour palettes.

Maintain walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, veneer lift, or fading.
