This pair of large 18th century architectural brackets originates from the Continental tradition and is fashioned from dark brown carved oak. Each substantial element displays intricate decorative elements including carved acanthus leaf motifs, pronounced volute scrolls, and a terminal urn finial at the top. The timber shows a weathered dark brown patina with visible grain texture and aged surface wear throughout. Mounted securely upon custom metal display stands with flat iron bases, these salvage pieces stand independently. Well suited for display within a gentleman's library or similar traditional interior scheme, the brackets sit effectively upon a sideboard top or large console. The pair measures up to 115 cm in height and approximately 88 cm in width, commanding significant presence as standalone decorative objects on display surfaces within the home.

In 18th-century architecture, carved brackets and corbels served both structural and decorative functions, supporting mantels, cornices, or heavy shelving while incorporating intricate Baroque and Rococo motifs.

Architectural brackets from this era were typically hand-carved from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or lime, using gouges and chisels to construct scrolling volutes, acanthus leaves, and classical ornamentation.

Authentic period examples display irregular hand-carving marks, natural shrinkage cracks along the grain, deep patination in recessed areas, and evidence of historic mounting methods on the reverse sides.

These structural elements can be integrated into contemporary spaces as standalone sculptural objects on mantelpieces or sideboards, mounted directly as architectural wall art, or repurposed to support bespoke shelving.

Dust the intricate relief work gently with a soft bristle brush or microfibre cloth, avoid exposure to direct heat or moisture, and periodically apply a high-quality beeswax paste to nourish the timber.
