This French console table belongs to the 18th Century Louis XVI period, presenting a neoclassical design with a demilune profile. The piece combines a white Carrara marble top with a gilded finely carved wooden base, showing gold and white surfaces alongside natural wear on the gilding. The openwork apron displays carved vine leaves and grapes, flanked by square blocks with carved rosettes, while four fluted tapered legs stand underneath with carved foliate detailing at the upper sections and tapering towards the bottom. Measuring 89 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, this item functions practically in a home today when placed beside the front door to hold keys, correspondence, and decorative objects, or positioned in a hallway or living room against a wall as a focal point for lamps and mirrors.

FAQs

Louis XVI console tables typically feature neoclassical proportions, straight fluted legs, demilune or rectangular forms, and detailed floral or leaf carving, reflecting 18th-century classical revival influences.

These pieces are constructed from carved wood frameworkoften lime or pinefinished with water gilding using gold leaf, and frequently topped with a shaped slab of white or variegated marble.

Authentic antique examples show natural wear to the gilding revealing red or yellow bole clay underneath, carved wooden joinery on the underside, and hand-cut marble slabs with faint age-related patination.

Position the table against a narrow hallway wall or in an entryway, pairing the marble surface with minimalist ceramics or a contemporary mirror mounted above to balance historical detail with modern aesthetic principles.

Dust delicate carved giltwood gently with a soft dry feather duster or soft brush without water or chemical polish, and clean marble tops using a damp soft cloth with a pH-neutral cleaner.
