This nineteenth-century French Louis XVI style console table brings classic elegance to an interior setting. Standing on three tapered legs, the demi-lune piece combines carved wood and giltwood with an original cream paint finish and gold detailing. The structure includes a carved wreath crest positioned centrally beneath the marble top, along with ornate gilded mouldings and decorative carving running along the apron and down the leg shafts. The inlaid marble surface displays a painted geometric design across the top, showing subtle signs of historic wear to the painted surfaces that reflect its age. Measuring 76 cm high, 58 cm wide and 28 cm deep, the table fits neatly against a wall in a narrow hallway, reception room, or beside the front door to hold small decorative items.

FAQs

The Louis XVI style, originating in 18th-century France, is characterised by Neoclassical restraint, rectilinear forms, geometric symmetry, and classical motifs such as floral wreaths, husks, and straight tapered legs.

These console tables were typically constructed from carved hardwoods such as beech, pine, or oak, layered with gesso, painted finishes, and gold leaf gilding on ornamental accents.

Authentic period paint finishes display natural age-related wear, subtle crazing, oxidisation of underlying wood or gesso, and uneven patination rather than uniform artificially distressed patterns.

A demi-lune console table functions well in narrow entryways or hallways, styled with a wall-mounted period mirror directly above the centre line and minimal decorative ceramics on top.

Dust the surface regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, wax polishes, or harsh chemical cleaners that can compromise original paint and gilding.
