Sienna Marble Table

Circa 1880 a George II style marble top carved and gilded Console/Pier table of Serpentine form.
 
The Sienna marble top with Ogee moulded edge above a carved and gilded support, sans stretcher. The deep apron with a central floral motif between two C scrolls above a stylised bell flower. Supported on carved and gilded cabriole legs decorated with C and S, scrolling with carved cabochon within acanthus leaf decoration to the knee, terminating on carved scrolling feet.
 
Originally console tables only had two front legs and were permanently attached to the wall. They were used to decorate the hall area, formal reception rooms and Grande Salons.
 
It was during the Georgian and Regency periods that they became free standing, at this time a large mirror was placed above the console table, the console table was placed between the windows of large formal rooms. Pier is an architectural term for the wall space between windows, hence, Pier mirror and Pier table.
