This French painted console table dates from 1890 and follows the Louis XVI style. It is made from wood with a hand-carved, painted finish in shades of grey and white. The piece stands on fluted legs with carved rosettes at the top corners, and features an arched stretcher base with a central finial, decorative scrollwork moulding along the frieze, and a half-circle top with carved edge details. The dimensions are 90 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. FAQs

Louis XVI style furniture, prominent in late 18th-century France, is characterised by Neoclassical restraint, featuring straight lines, symmetrical proportions, fluted columns, turned legs, and classic architectural motifs such as carved rosettes and friezes.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, beech, or walnut, which were carved by hand and finished with paint, gesso, or lacquers to protect the timber and match grand interior colour schemes.

Authentic period pieces display traditional joinery techniques, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, irregularities in hand-carved details, and layered, naturally worn paint or gesso patina showing underlying timber.

Place the table against a prominent wall in an entryway or hallway, styled with a gilded mirror or contemporary artwork above it to create a balanced contrast between historic architecture and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, abrasive polish, or chemical solvents, which can strip historic paint layers and damage the wood underneath.
