This Victorian mahogany reading table demonstrates practical design through its solid dark brown timber construction and integrated utility. The top incorporates two adjustable book rests that fold upward alongside a flat writing surface, supported centrally by a faceted column above a quadform platform base fitted with turned bun feet and brass castors. Standing 75 cm high, 90 cm wide and 44 cm deep with a maximum height extending to 103 cm, the piece offers functional versatility for a study, library, or living space. Placed at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, it provides a stable surface for holding books and documents in a traditional interior setting.

A Victorian reading table is an occasional piece of furniture designed during the 19th century with an adjustable, hinged top or ratchet mechanism to support books or manuscripts at varied angles.

These tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring traditional joinery, brass fittings, and hand-shaped pedestal columns on solid plinth bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-accurate brass hardware, hand-cut joinery, original ratchet or support mechanisms, natural timber patination, and age-consistent wear on the base and castors.

Position the piece alongside an armchair, beside a sofa, or within a quiet corner to serve as an occasional table, tablet stand, or display surface for literature.

Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the surface condition.
